Medical Camp for leprosy cured persons in Thurinchapuram Block.

After the integration of leprosy control program as a component of primary health care, to know the status of leprosy cured persons a small study was conducted in Thurinchapuram Block. 63 persons were listed and home visit was made. 6 persons were not able to be traced. 4 have died. From the balance of 53 persons 52 persons were in need of Micro cellular sandals-which can safeguard their feet,32 persons had ulcer which needed regular care.

The camp was organized in the primary health center Narthampondi for those who are closer to the Primary Health Center (PHC) in the presence of the Local medical officer in collaboration with The Leprosy Mission. The first intention was to make both parties understand that, when-ever the leprosy cured persons need medical care they can approach the PHC in their area and it is the duty of the PHC medical staff to attend to them.

Health education was given to all the persons present about the self-care of ulcers and a demonstration was carried out. A self care kit was provided to each one of them. This opportunity provided them to discuss about the problems they face and ways and means to get over it.
